How Datapath.io improves AWS-performance in Latin America
Case Study Summary
Datapath.io is optimizing real-time performance from AWS Virginia to Latin American cities, helping Akdemia to provide a great tool for school management.
- performance from us-east-1 to Latin American countries is improved
- data sends over the protected routes to keep personal information about kids/schools secure
Akdemia is a beautiful and easy to use school management platform designed to bring out the best in the school. Akdemia is made to be the only tool a school community will ever need. It is helpful for teachers, parents, and students, offering a lot of functionality such as assignments, reports, instant messaging, mass emailing, school analytics and other tools in one application.
Juan Lagrange, CEO of Akdemia, explained how the service works: “Akdemia is a school management platform that enables all community members to communicate with each other and gives them different tools, based on their roles. Teachers, for example, can provide homework and create assignments in real-time. At the same time, parents are constantly updated with the information of what the grades are. They don’t have to wait for months to receive a report card. Moreover, students can interact with each other, share notes, and use the calendar. The admin has a reporting on the entire school to know exactly what is going on”.
Thus, Akdemia provides several tools which work in real-time and then require a fast connection between AWS cloud and different regions where the users are located:
“It is a software as a service, AWS cloud-based. We offer both web- and mobile- versions for Android and iOS. Currently, we’re using a hybrid between the cloud providers AWS (us-east-1, Virginia) and DigitalOcean. All our customers are based in South America – we work with schools in Mexico, Peru, Columbia, and Venezuela. Around 20 000-25 000 students and their families signed up so far,” – said Juan Lagrange, CEO of Akdemia.
How the Datapath.io solution helped
Mexico City, Caracas, Bogota, Lima, and Valencia (Venezuela) are the TOP 5 destinations where Akdemia’s users are located. The Datapath.io task is to improve AWS performance between AWS North Virginia region and these locations in South America to be sure that the connection is always fast and reliable:
“Currently, schools that are using Akdemia, are located in the major cities: the capitals or just big cities. On our platform, everything is going on in real-time. For example, we have a messenger integrated into our platform. It is a kind of simple “WhatsApp” for communication between teachers and parents. Moreover, we have a functionality of mass emailing, which is very useful to inform everyone in school about important events. We’re using Datapath.io and everything works smoothly, without any technical issues from a cloud performance perspective,” – told us Juan Lagrange, CEO of Akdemia.
Additionally, the security issue is very important because the service deals with delicate information about kids. Since Datapath.io sends data over a protected network, Akdemia doesn’t need to worry about that:
“School are making the decisions very slow because this process is complex and it’s also related to very delicate information about kids. For us security is very important,” – said Juan Lagrange, CEO of Akdemia.
Some results of AWS performance improvement could be seen in the screenshots below.
For instance, network latency between Mexico City and AWS Virginia decreased by 13% on average, which is around 9 ms (yellow line is default AWS route, purple – Datapath.io optimized route).
For Bogota, another important direction for Akdemia, latency improvement reached 17.8% on average, which is almost 18 ms faster.
In the future Akdemia has big plans and wonderful opportunities to grow because the platform provides hundreds of features, resulting in saved costs and great user experiences for schools. Juan Lagrange, CEO of Akdemia, shared his ideas concerning the business development of the service in the future:
“We’re working on a light free version of Akdemia to make the process of signup faster and easier. We want to create an opportunity for all teachers worldwide to sign up and build a virtual classroom without having the entire school on board. After teachers start to use it, a school also may join later. This is on our roadmap right now. We have requests from all over the world, for example, from Russia, Turkey, Singapore… With our new free version, we can extend much faster and accommodate these users. And Datapath.io’s solution will be valuable for us as more and more schools from around the world will manage their activities with Akdemia“.
